Inclusive Swing Design: Movement for Everyone
Swinging is one of childhood's most treasured experiences. Yet traditional swing designs exclude many children from this fundamental play experience.
Why Swings Matter for Inclusion
Swinging provides crucial vestibular input - the sense of movement and balance that helps children develop spatial awareness, coordination, and body control.
Types of Inclusive Swings
- Basket Swings: Large, enclosed swings that can accommodate wheelchair users, children who need postural support, or multiple children swinging together.
- Cradle Swings: Provide full-body support for children who cannot sit independently.
- Platform Swings: Large flat platforms allow wheelchair users to roll directly onto the swing.
Design Considerations
Ensure accessible pathways to all swing bays. Include equipment at multiple heights and difficulty levels. Position swings so children can see each other and interact whilst swinging.
Case Study: Seaburn Promenade, Sunderland, UK
Seaburn's landmark 3,500m² seafront playground, completed in 2024, prioritised inclusivity with an inclusive swing set integrated to support better interaction amongst all children of varying abilities. Bonded pathways ensure accessibility for wheelchair users throughout the site, whilst wheelchair-accessible equipment including slides and sand play platforms create opportunities for truly inclusive play.
