Experimentarium Playground, Germany – A Timeless Seafaring Adventure by Richter Spielgeräte

At the heart of Zingst, a seaside resort on the Baltic coast of Germany, lies a unique destination where science and play meet—the Experimentarium. This interactive science centre has long been a haven for curious minds, but its outdoor playground, designed and installed by Richter Spielgeräte, has elevated the visitor experience even further. Featuring an impressive playship and a meticulously crafted play environment, this playground showcases Richter Spielgeräte’s enduring commitment to creating high-quality, immersive play spaces that prioritise the joy of discovery.

Project Overview:

The Experimentarium playground draws its inspiration from the Hanseatic era, bringing to life a harbour town scene on the beach. The focal point is an enormous, stranded two-mast ship, complete with a steering wheel, lookout, and a thrilling trough slide. Surrounding the ship, bright, gabled structures reminiscent of Hanseatic architecture house the workshops of the Experimentarium, seamlessly blending the worlds of science and play.

Richter Spielgeräte’s design encourages children to immerse themselves in role-play, as they climb the ship’s hull, navigate the rigging, and imagine themselves sailing the high seas. The playship is not just a visual centrepiece; it serves as a platform for adventure, allowing children to explore, interact, and challenge themselves in a setting that sparks creativity and physical activity.

Unique Features:

What sets the Experimentarium playground apart is its perfect blend of aesthetic appeal and high play value. Richter Spielgeräte has a long-standing reputation for designing play equipment that goes beyond mere functionality. The playship is an example of their dedication to creating structures that invite children into another world, where their imaginations can flourish. With its robust construction and thoughtfully integrated play elements, the ship fosters both physical development and social interaction, offering endless opportunities for role-play and cooperative games.

Every aspect of the playground has been carefully considered to ensure children remain engaged, active, and challenged. From climbing the rigging to racing down the slide, the playground offers both cognitive and physical stimulation. The surrounding Hanseatic-inspired structures provide additional layers of engagement, creating a harmonious space that feels both historical and fantastical.

Richter Spielgeräte – A Company Rooted in Play:

For decades, Richter Spielgeräte has been a leader in the design and manufacture of playground equipment that prioritises play value above all else. Their approach is not driven by profit but by a passion for creating spaces where children can learn through play, challenge their abilities, and connect with their surroundings. This ethos is evident in the Experimentarium playground, where each element has been crafted to offer maximum play potential.

Richter Spielgeräte understands that children need spaces where they can be free to explore and experiment without limitations. Whether it’s climbing the ropes of the playship or pretending to be the captain steering the vessel, the equipment encourages open-ended play that supports both individual discovery and group play. The durability and timeless design of the equipment also ensure that it will continue to provide these opportunities for years to come, standing as a testament to the company’s commitment to quality.

Play as a Priority:

At the Experimentarium, Richter Spielgeräte has created a playground that is as much a learning environment as it is a source of entertainment. The playship and surrounding structures are not only visually striking but also deeply functional, offering a variety of play experiences that engage children’s minds and bodies. Importantly, the playground’s design reflects Richter Spielgeräte’s philosophy: that true play value comes from the depth of engagement a child can experience, not from flashy, commercialised designs.

This commitment to play value over profit is a cornerstone of Richter Spielgeräte’s approach, and the Experimentarium playground embodies this ideal perfectly. The thoughtful design, attention to detail, and focus on creating immersive, long-lasting play experiences demonstrate the company’s dedication to enhancing children's development through play.

A Blueprint for Enduring Play:

The Experimentarium playground is more than just an addition to the science centre—it is an essential part of the visitor experience, drawing families in and offering children a chance to let their imaginations run wild. The ship and surrounding play structures are not only beloved by the local community but have also become a tourist attraction, bringing visitors from across the region.

As cities and towns look to create enriching play environments, the Experimentarium playground offers a model of what is possible when design, play value, and craftsmanship come together. The success of this project is a testament to the power of thoughtful, high-quality play spaces that can serve generations of children, reminding us that true play is not just about fun, but about fostering creativity, resilience, and social bonds.
