Accessible Seating & Social Areas
Playgrounds are social spaces where relationships form and communities gather. For wheelchair users and their families, accessible seating and social areas determine whether they can fully participate in the playground's social life.
Why Social Spaces Matter
Parents and caregivers need places to sit near playing children. Wheelchair users need spaces where they can interact with peers at comfortable heights. Rest areas allow continued engagement without leaving the playground community.
Design Principles
- Integrated Seating: Position wheelchair-accessible areas adjacent to traditional seating. Distribute throughout the playground rather than concentrating in one area.
- Accessible Tables: Table surface at 700-750mm height with minimum 700mm clear knee space underneath. Consider tables with built-in play features such as our Square Sand Table, which is easily accessible for wheelchair users.
- Varied Seating Types: Benches with backs and arms, varied heights, circle or curved configurations for conversation.
- Comfort Features: Shade over seating areas is essential. Wind protection extends seasonal use. Ensure water doesn't pool in seating areas.
