Accessible Pathways and Surfacing: The Foundation of Inclusive Play
Before a child in a wheelchair can engage with any playground equipment, they must be able to reach it. Access paths and surfacing are the foundation of inclusive playground design.
The Challenge
At Timberplay, we balance natural materials with accessibility. We reject the false choice between hard institutional surfaces and nature-disconnected design.
Path Requirements
Minimum 1500mm width allows wheelchair passing. Ensure adequate turning circles. Maximum gradient of 1:20 (5%) is ideal. Flat rest areas every 10 metres on sloped pathways.
Surface Materials
- Bound Gravel Systems: Natural stone aggregates bound with clear resin create firm, smooth surfaces that drain effectively whilst maintaining natural appearance.
- Composite Materials: Timber-effect composites create boardwalk-style pathways that look natural but provide perfectly smooth access.
- Rubber Safety Surfacing: Creates completely smooth, accessible surfaces meeting safety standards.

Material Compromises
Natural-looking accessible surfaces often require more maintenance than synthetic alternatives. We consider this worthwhile - playgrounds should feel like outdoor spaces.
