Creating Safe, Comfortable Spaces for All Children
Truly inclusive playgrounds recognise that not all children thrive in high-stimulation environments all the time. Safety and comfort go beyond meeting regulatory standards.
The Need for Calm Zones
Calm zones provide retreat spaces where children can decompress without leaving the playground entirely. These support self-regulation and extended play.
Designing Effective Calm Zones
Use muted, natural colours. Position calm zones away from the noisiest play elements. Include low-stimulation activities and comfortable seating for both children and caregivers.
Shade: A Critical Element
Shade isn't just about sun protection - it's a crucial accessibility feature. Children with certain medical conditions struggle to regulate body temperature. In hot climates like Dubai, shade is essential.
Read our article on sun safety in playground design to learn how strategic shade integration and climate-resilient materials like Robinia wood protect children from harmful UV radiation whilst creating cooler, more comfortable play environments, particularly in hot climates like the MENA region.

Acoustic Considerations
Sound design is often-neglected. Children with autism, auditory processing disorders, or hearing aids can find typical playground noise overwhelming.
Use timber (which absorbs sound better than metal), create zones with different acoustic characteristics, and include musical panels that create intentional, controlled sound.
